Where Can I Easily Buy Healthy Food?

It is a common misconception that buying healthy food requires specialty stores, specialty products, and lots of effort. But this is simply not the case.

Healthy food is simple food. Healthy food is timeless — it is what our ancestors have been eating for centuries. Healthy food generally has just one ingredient – it’s a blackberry, a walnut, a salmon, an egg. Healthy food is basic, providing the foundational building blocks our bodies need to thrive. Healthy food is not foreign, it is not filled with unpronounceable and unrecognizable ingredients, it is food you know — meat, fish, eggs, fruits, veggies, nuts seeds, healthy fats, and spices.

And it is available where most of us do our food shopping, at our local grocery store, such as Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Vons, Albertsons, Kroger’s, Wegmans, and Target, to name a few, and our local wholesale grocery store, such as Costco and Sam’s Club.

The takeaway here is that in one place, you can find all you need to nourish your body. You don’t need fancy stores or products. Eating health is not so much about changing where we buy our food since most of us already do our food shopping at grocery stores. It’s about changing what we buy when we are there.

Next time, before heading to the grocery store, make a list, and try using the following categories to organize your list into healthy buckets: meat, fish, eggs, fruits, veggies, nuts seeds, healthy fats, and spices. Which are your favorites in each of these categories? Stock up on those.

Prioritize foods you enjoy and taste good to you. There are so many healthy foods out there. Check out some examples below for inspiration.

Meat –beef, poultry, turkey, lamb, pork, duck

Fish- salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, herring

Eggs – pastured and organic if possible, but if not, regular eggs are just fine

Fruits – strawberries, blueberries, oranges, mangoes, tangerines, avocados, tomatoes, olives, blackberries

Vegetables – any variety of potatoes, arugula, radishes, brussel sprouts, squash, kale, chard, beets

Nuts and Seeds – almonds, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds

Healthy fats – ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, beef tallow, butter

Spices – saffron, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, tarragon, cardamom, cumin

If you prefer to purchase your online, there are several options, including ThriveMarket and AmazonFresh. Some local grocery stores also allow for online purchase and delivery. However note that ThriveMarket does not sell fresh fruits and vegetables.
