My name is Emily Epsten. I used to wake up exhausted, plagued by digestive discomfort throughout the day. My stomach and lack of energy were always on my mind. I would gripe that no matter what I tried, nothing seemed to help. It was so frustrating. Any of that sound familiar to you?
I didn’t know where to start and was overwhelmed with all the possible options available for regaining my gut health and energy. In spite of my doubts and frustrations, I knew there was an answer out there for me.
My stomach problems began in elementary school and followed me for decades.
Medication never helped and things seemed to be getting worse. When I started working, I had a hard time getting out of bed and felt tired most of the day, no matter how much sleep I got. Why? Why did I feel so bad when I was doing everything right: eating oatmeal with orange juice for breakfast, whole wheat sandwiches with deli meat for lunch, while avoiding egg yolks, red meat, and butter. I thought I was making the right choices to support my health, but nothing I did seemed to help. Something was off, but like many busy people, my days were full with work, friends, traveling, having fun, everything except focusing on my health and listening to my body.
After years of this, plainly said, I was tired of being tired, fed up with feeling bloated and living with stomach pain. There wasn’t a major diagnosis or event to mark my turning point. I just started paying attention to my body and looked for a better way.
Through research I stumbled upon the world of functional health and the power of eating an anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense diet to increase energy and improve gut health.
Experimenting began! I slowly made changes to my diet, and after a series of baby steps, I started feeling better. Bigger steps followed and I discovered for the first time in my life, what it FELT like to be truly healthy.
My bloating and stomach pain disappeared. I now wake up rested and all-day energy fuels my passions of surfing, climbing, and backpacking. Changing my diet was the catalyst that created a domino effect of healthy behaviors that make my life today: pain-free, balanced, and fulfilled.
Overhauling and upgrading my diet changed my life.
Reflecting back, from childhood my body was telling me something was off. It took me over twenty years to listen to my body and find a remedy. Inspired, I became an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach to help others reclaim their health. I truly believe a client-centered, personalized approach to behavior change is the most effective way to integrate sustainable health-promoting change into a persons’ life.
My interests have always centered around health. I studied global health at the University of Washington and received my Master’s in Public Health at UCLA. I worked for the San Francisco Department of Public Health and a non-profit in international development focusing on HIV/AIDS, women’s empowerment, anti-human trafficking, maternal and child health, and chronic disease. The common thread of my educational and work experience has been to support people and communities to live healthier lives.
Starting the journey can be the hardest part and I am here to help you find the way that works for you.
We are all individuals and together you and I will discover your unique baby steps to regain health, confidence, and energy. It is possible to feel great when the alarm goes off in the morning and sustain that feeling all day. A healthier gut gives you the freedom to put your mental energy towards the things that you love, rather than worrying about how you feel.
